Rivaul, inspired by real life player Rivaldo, is the captain and star player of FC Barcelona when Tsubasa joins the team. Since they both play in the same position (center attacking midfielder), there is a clash between them. Before playing for Barcelona, he played for Deportivo de la Coruña. His full name is Fernando Cosas Dutra.
When introduced during the Road to 2002 arc, Rivaul is considered to be the best player in the world, winner of the latest Golden Ball award. He becomes friends with Tsubasa, who succesfully replaces him for a few months due to an injury that was aggravated during the match against Real Madrid. When he returns from injury, Barcelona manages to play him and Tsubasa together, forming a new “golden duo”.
Rivaul is then called for the Brazil Olympic team, as one of the three allowed over 23 years of age players (the others being Radunga and Robecaro).
